winter redfishing

Had a half day trip with Jarrett and his son last week.  We hit some areas that have been productive lately and caught 15-20 reds on soft plastics.  We hit several spots and caught fish at each spot.  Was good caching up w Jarrett for the first time in 5 years.

EPIC afternoon on the Cape Fear

Hit the Cape fear @10:30 this morning.  Decided to hit some new water this morning while I had some tide.  Second cast 19" red.  Moved on shortly after to a new area.  Found fish crashing small bait.  I sized my presentation down to a three inch bait to match the sized bait they were eating.  First cast nice striper worked me pretty good and then spit the hook.  Lost the next two same way.  Switched to a bigger hook and landed a striper and 10 more reds at this spot.  Went back to the dock to pick up my fishing partner for the afternoon and we went in the opposite direction.  Hit two of my favorite spots on the bottom of the fall and landed one 8 lb striper.  Moved a couple more times and finished up at my favorite stretch of water.  This is when it got crazy.  There got slack, which is normally bad, but not today.  We had over 30 bites on stripers today.  Got some on topwater late.  Landed @12.  Pulled the hooks on several.

Awesome day and we left them biting as we got a topwater double to end the day.

short trip after church

My wife and I hit the water as we had a baby sitter to watch the babies while they took their naps.  We hit the water at 3 pm and fished a few spots I scouted the other day.  Shannon started out hot and landed the first six fish to my none at the first spot.  One of these reds was fat as a football and almost 26".  That fish had a hook that had almost worked its way out of his system.  We hit the next spot and i finally landed my first two reds and Shannon pulled the hooks on two more.  Then Shannon caught the biggest fish of the day on her DOA jerkbait-a 30" fat striper.  That fish worked her pretty good.  At one point she turned around and asked me if the fish was ever going to stop taking line.  Then right before we left she stuck another striper.  This fish was about 7 lbs.  After this we decided to make our way back to the ramp.  We hit one more spot and caught 2 reds and pulled the hooks on a couple more.  Was a nice day on the water with my wife.

Slow start to some hot Cape Fear action

Had a fun trip with Scottie and Matt this morning.  The tide wasn't ideal for what I had in mind but the boys landed three stripers early and 5 or six reds later in the day.  It got slow as usual at low tide but after i dropped Scottie and Matt off at the dock the tide was rising and I decided to go back out and scout some new areas.  The first spot I pulled three reds and one stripers.  I moved to another bank and wacked 3 more reds.  The next bank was holding a small school of mid to upper slots.  Pulled a 27" and 25" fish that was fat as a football and 3 more fish from that area.  Hit two more spots and wacked about 5 more small reds.  Then I popped a 15 lb striper before I headed back to the ramp.  What a day!

My first Atlantic Salmon

Got my first Atlantic Salmon A couple of days ago while in Connecticut on business.  I snuck out early one morning and stuck this 31" fish on a soft plastic.  Was ecstatic to land one of these beautiful fish in its native waters.

The water has cooled down but the fishing is red hot!

Had several trips the past week and all have been productive.  Only had one slow day on the specks and that was last Saturday, but we got some reds and a striper on a bitter cold and windy day.  Got out with my dad this past Friday and we caught some nice trout and reds in a very short trip.  Hit the water Monday and Tuesday and covered about 30 miles of water in two days.  Caught trout and reds in several areas from the backwaters to the surf zone.  I found fish in some new areas and some familiar haunts.  Tuesday I had slick calm conditions and was able to locate six schools of reds and sight fished a school of 2-3 lb trout.  What a day.  Caught 30 or so reds and well over 100 trout.  Those r very conservative estimates.  My day started at a spot all alone and I wacked  trout on every cast for two solid hours.  Not a lot of bigguns but a very fun start to the day.  Left these fish as fired up as I found them to pursue other fish in several different areas.

Tight lines,

Thanksgiving Trout

Rennie and I had a great afternoon fishing trip today after a nice Thanksgiving lunch with the family. We only had about an hour and a half of daylight so we had to make it count. We went to one spot and that spot was awesome. On the second cast Rennie hooked a nice trout. It was my turn after that. I caught a few 3lb trout and a few were 2lbs. We landed about 20 trout in that hour and a half. It was a little chilly but not too bad. It makes it a little more bearable when you're having a blast catching so many fish in such a short period of time. The fishing is great this time of year! - Capt Shannon

Cool weather trout

Got out for a short trip w Toddles.  She had a half day of school so we hit the water around 3 pm.  Fished a new spot and wacked our limit on specks in short order.  Took us a little while to find them, but caught them almost every cast for the last thirty minutes of daylight with two reds mixed in.

the water is cool but the Fishing is hot!
